The Foundation’s strategic grantmaking focused on direct investments to schools as well as nonprofits that support building the capacity and enabling the conditions required to make changes at a systemic level. In addition, we funded nonprofits that contribute to improving Oakland education on a broader scale as well as nonprofits aligned with the Foundation’s overall mission and vision. During this time period the Foundation’s strategic grantmaking focused on expanding options to quality schools, blended personalized learning, and literacy as well as organizations and projects that advanced the use of data to improve students outcomes. In addition, we continued to fund nonprofits that contributed to improving Oakland education on a broader scale and select nonprofits with a long history of contributing to the development and success of children and students across our community. Since its inception, the Foundation has focused on improving education in Oakland. During our early years grantmaking was not guided by a formal strategic plan. In reflection, these early grants supported community drive reform, literacy, quality schools, and youth development.
