A New Chapter for the Oakland Literacy Coalition

Eight years ago the Oakland Literacy Coalition began with the goal of bringing literacy organizations together to build a community of practitioners who could share best practices and build stronger partnerships between member organizations and the Oakland Unified School District. Now the Oakland Literacy Coalition is launching as an independent organization. This new chapter in the life of the Coalition will provide the opportunity and autonomy for building a long-standing anchor institution to support and champion literacy in Oakland for many years to come.

Meet the Friends of Cal Crew

For student-athletes on the Cal rowing team, raising money for new boats and equipment should be the last thing on their minds. “We want our athletes to focus on school and rowing and have them be successful in both,” says Friends of Cal Crew fundraiser Cole Reiser. The Friends of Cal Crew is a fundraising organization supported by the Rogers Family Foundation and T. Gary Rogers, who attributes much of his business success to his time as a rower for Cal. Boats, equipment, scholarships, airplane tickets, everything that helps Cal Crew function and exist is funded by money raised by the Friends of Cal Crew.

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states, and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school success and high school graduation—grade-level reading by the end of third grade.
